Faqs About Horse Bits
In horse racing, horse bits are ridden with snaffle and equestrian bits/ horse bits. The horse bit is usually aluminum, stainless steel, or rubber, sometimes with copper nozzles. Although several types of equestrian bits/horse bits are used for racing, sport, and pleasure horses, for racehorses, the snaffle bit is the most common. The snaffle consists of two pieces that are joined in the center using a pivot. Soft snaffle bits are relatively gentle bites. The advantage of racing with brass horse bits over other types of horse bits is that they are less bulky and offer significant lateral control for the jockey or exercise rider.
Horse Bits Types:
The earliest horse bits of metal contained copper, which was in the form of bronze. Some are made up of both metals. Stainless steel drill bits with a roller on the copper nozzle are standard. Copper horse bits have a copper mouthpiece; the shank ring and the bit are generally stainless steel. Its copper color quickly identifies a bit with a copper nozzle.
Stainless steel is durable and inexpensive to produce. It is the most popular material used for horse bits. Bits of copper are more expensive but offer an “attractive taste” to horses, encouraging some horses to salivate. Brass horse bits are durable, custom-made, and designed to perfection.
Horse Hits Advice
More than a centimeter margin could damage the palate due to extreme looseness in the articulated horse bits. An inadequate height adjustment could create tension, poor distribution of the fillet action, and damage to the teeth.
The ideal height is achieved when adjusting the studs by creating two subtle folds at the corners of the lips with the mouth closed and one fold when the horse opens its mouth.
The length of the fillet of the horse’s mouth is found by measuring the valuable area of the barrels.
- 100 – 105 mm: Shetland or miniature ponies
- 11 – 11.5 cm: ponies and horses less than 60cm at the withers
- 12 – 12.5 cm: standard size or large head ponies
- 13 – 13.5 cm: large horses
- 14 – 14.5 cm: large head horses or steaks to use with a bit
- 15 – 15.5 cm: extra large measure (very special cases)
Barrel thickness increases 2mm by 2mm normally
- Fine: from 8mm to 14mm
- Medium: between 14mm and 18mm
- Thickness: from 18mm to 24mm
- The thickness of the fillet always depends on the type of mouth each horse has. The type of discipline and the action of the rider’s hand also come into play. The combination of these factors will determine what hardness is required

The former controls the horse bits, while the latter allows the horse’s head to remain at a certain level. Many harness trainers use various driver-bits, but other bits are used for horses with specific problems.

Horse Bits Bank: Investigate everything and focus on the choice!
One of the best tricks to find the horses bits is to collect as much information. Some steaks and horse bits for horses are the same as the traditional ones articulated with two or three pieces of the mouthpiece. However, they have the angle of articulation locked towards the inside of the horse’s mouth. In this way, the fillet moves typically in the horse’s mouthless when the action is sought with the contact exerted by the rein. In the same way, the fillet does not articulate and does not exert pressure per articulation, but only on the bars.
What is the purpose of a horse bit?
A horse bit is designed according to the action of the mouthpiece or the rings to offer a specific hardness according to the needs of the horse and rider. The fillets act on the tongue, corners of the lips, palate, and/or on the bars of the jaw. The articulated or straight bits also exert action in the same areas as the fillets, adding the pressure by lever and the chain that acts on the chin.
Horse bits have two main parts, the mouthpiece, which is the part that sits in the horse’s mouth and, depending on the type of bit. The bit ring or the shank is the part that sits outside the mouth, where the bridle reins are fixed. Bits can be composed of various metals, including stainless steel, copper and brass horse bit.
Is a horse bit cruel?
A horse bit can be cruel in response to discomfort. Choosing the wrong equestrian bits can be the starting point of physical problems and horse training evolution. The symptoms of discomfort due to a wrong action of the fillet in the horse’s mouth are usually some such as overcasting, hanging from contact or, on the contrary, not making contact, shaking the head, running wild, raising hands, raising the head, etc. Many reasons could explain the cause of a horse bit being cruel.
Are bits painful for horses?
The wrong choice of the bit for your horse is the first point to check. To avoid the pain, opt for a correct fit. 3 to 5 millimetres should protrude on each side of the mouth to avoid excessive pressure on the corners and sides. A very effective trick to check that you have acquired the correct horse bit is to move the fillet so that it only protrudes from one side and check that a finger’s width remains.
What is the harshest horse bit?
Wire mouth bits are the harshest depending on how thick or thin, with two or more twisted wires since these bits can scratch the horse’s mouth. Materials resulting from research carried out by world-renowned brands with their Wire mouth bits for a much more effective result.
Choose horse Bits according to the discipline and the desired lever effect. Depending on the composition material, the thickness and the design, the action on the horse’s mouth varies. It is usually a recommended piece in general for all types of horses.
Horse Bits favour the flexibility of the neck in circular or bending work that, like all fillets, will increase or decrease the hardness. It is ideal to gradually accustom a strong horse to work progressively with less hardness in the mouth.
